Rule B.12: Conference Papers

Return to Red Rules

The Bluebook does not provide clear guidance on conference papers. Per this rule, conference papers should be cited with the author’s name in ordinary Roman type and the title italicized, followed by a pincite if available. The paper title should be followed with a parenthetical detailing the name of the conference, abbreviated according to 15.1(d) and the year the conference was held. A URL should be appended to the citation to direct the reader to the online source if one exists.

YES: Frodo Baggins, Caring for Unique Family Heirlooms 4 (Int’l Conf. on Antique Jewelry, 2019), https://www.ICAJ.com/2019-papers/Baggins.pdf.

Some conferences compile papers into a book reference. If this source is readily available, the conference paper may be cited according to Bluebook 15.5.1.
