Rule B.5: Use of Signals

Return to Red Rules

As a general rule, introductory signals may be used only in the manner described in Bluebook Rule 1.2. Please note the following:

  1. The word “also” is not a signal unto itself. It does not function in the same manner as “e.g.” Rather, “also” may only be used in the signal “see also.” Thus, “accord also” or “but see also” would be inappropriate signals.
  2. Staffers should not suggest the use of the “see generally” signal where it does not exist in the author’s work, but if “see generally” is used by an outside author, TLR will retain that signal.
